Jawa Barat (West Java) contains some of the most popular Ribus in Indonesia, the province being adjacent to the sprawling metropolis of Jakarta and containing the cities of Bandung (the provincial capital) and Bogor. Getting to Jawa Barat and traveling around the province is easy, and there are good roads to get you close to the Ribus and railways help you travel to some strategic locations like Bandung and Cirebon. Have a look at Kereta Api for train information and Cipaganti (or similar) for excellent road transport options between Jakarta and Bandung. For transport from Jakarta to Garut and Tasikmalaya, the best options are the very reasonably-priced Primajasa buses.
The giants of the province, Pangrango and Ciremai, are climbed on a daily basis during the dry season and are some of the best hikes in Java. The large number of peaks surrounding Bandung vary from excellent and fascinating volcanoes (Papandayan, Guntur (Masigit), Tangkuban Parahu) to fairly ordinary forest treks (Cikuray, Bukittunggul, Tampomas, Malabar). The two peaks to the east of Jatiluhur reservoir, Parang and Bongkok, make excellent day trips from Jakarta.
If you are not a fan of sharing the summit views with hundreds of other hikers, it is best you go either mid-week or during Ramadan, as over the last decade the number of hikers on mountains across Java during the weekend has increased unimaginably. This means that trails are usually obvious (though badly-eroded) but also that there is a fair amount of litter and if camping you may not get much sleep due to the incessant chattering of local student hikers.
For domestic flights from or to West Java, such as the airport in Bandung, we recommend Baolau.
For accommodation in and around West Java, we recommend Booking.com to search for suitable hotels, homestays, resorts and apartments for your trip.
We recommend Safety Wing as travel insurance for overseas travellers and tourists hiking up to elevations not exceeding 4500 metres.
