Bromo is probably the most popular volcano attraction in Indonesia. Situated in the middle of the “Sea of Sand” (lautan pasir), the ancient crater of the Tengger caldera, Bromo itself is only 2,329 metres high. The perfect ridged cone of Gunung Batok next to Bromo stands taller at 2,470m and the surrounding crater rim is higher in many places, with the highest peak being Gunung Pananjakan.

This Ribu is one of the most popular hikes in Central Java, and has spectacular views to other volcanoes in all directions from the summit area. It has five calderas, Condrodimuko, Kombang, Kendang, Rebab and Sambernyowo but no serious volcanic activity has been reported here for many decades. Merbabu can be climbed from several trails near Kopeng in the north (less than two hours by car from Semarang) with starting points at Thekelan, Cunthel and Wekas, or from the south at Selo (between Merbabu and Merapi and closer to Solo).
Gunung Bujang Melaka is a small mountain lying just to the west of the Banjaran Titiwangsa (or Main Range), separate enough to be a Ribu in its own right and accessible enough from the road and nearby train station at Kampar at the western side to be quite possible as a day hike.
Gunung Raya is the highest peak of Langkawi island and is one of the most north-westerly mountains of the lands where mountains are called ‘gunung’. Despite its name meaning ‘great’ or ‘big’, it is not be the most impressive peak nor the most interesting trek, but there are some decent views and it makes a very pleasant half-day out on what is a lovely island.
Mount Ophir – also known as Gunung Ledang – is the highest peak in Johor and the only Ribu on the Malay Peninsula south of Kuala Lumpur. It is rather popular with Singaporean hikers who visit over the weekend or even do a very long day-trip from Singapore. It is located in the Gunung Ledang National Park which is near the town of Tangkak and less than one hour from Melaka.
Gunung Rembau is the highest part of the large mountain range southeast of KL and Seremban. This hilly area stretches tens of kilometres from Seremban all the way down to Tampin in the south. The most popular hikes in the area are the easy Gunung Angsi (825m) in the north and Gunung Datuk (705m) in the south.
Gunung Nuang is Kuala’s Lumpur’s closest major mountain. It is one of the highest peaks in Selangor and it is very popular because both trailheads are only around one hour’s drive from the centre of Kuala Lumpur. Despite being so close to KL, the mountain is still home to a lot of wildlife and hornbills are frequently seen on the Janda Baik side of the range.

Gunung Bintang (‘star mountain’) is the highest peak in Kedah and is part of a very large mountain range stretching north all the way from Gunung Bubu south of Taiping. It is one of only 4 Ultra-prominent peaks in West Malaysia and is home to an impressive range of animals.
Gunung Irau is the highest peak in the popular Cameron Highlands, a plateau developed in the 1930s and named after Scottish geologist William Cameron who first surveyed the area in 1885.
