North Maluku province is comprised of the northern part of the Maluku islands, once famous in the western world as the ‘spice islands’. Sofifi is the administrative capital but Ternate is the largest population centre. There are regular flights from Jakarta and Sulawesi to Ternate.
Both Gamalama and Kiematubu are easily accessible and growing in popularity with local student hikers, but many of the mountains in the province are rarely climbed. In addition to Gamalama, Ibu, Dukono and Gamkonora are active volcanoes.
The highest peak in the province is Buku Sibela on the island of Bacan. It is now climbed two or three times a years by university hiking clubs from Java and Sumatra, on hikes lasting a minimum of three days.
