The Malaysian state of Sabah is located in the northeast part of the island of Borneo and it shares a border with Indonesia’s North Kalimantan. The capital of Sabah is Kota Kinabalu. The state is dominated by the Crocker Range and Borneo’s highest peak, Kinabalu. There are sometimes direct flights from Jakarta to Kota Kinabalu but often you will need to change in Kualap Lumpur or Singapore.
Kinabalu is often described as the highest peak in Southeast Asia (depending on the definition) and is very much a popular destination for energetic tourists although also somewhat complicated by the ever-present red tape and high prices. Trusmadi is Borneo’s second-highest peak and over the past decade has become much more popular with multiple trailheads. Third and fourth highest are, respectively, Gunung Sinsing and Gunung Tambuyukon and are both serious objectives that hikers from Kuala Lumpur set their sights on.
Lesser mountains that are also highly recommended include Gunung Nungkok – ‘the child of Kinabalu’, Gunung Mantapok with its wonderful summit views and scary bridge, and Gunung Magdalena which is the highest point in the brilliant Tawau Hills Park in the far south of the state just a few kilometres from Indonesia.
