West Nusa Tenggara (Nusa Tenggara Barat) is chiefly comprised of the islands of Lombok and Sumbawa. It lies between the provinces of Bali and East Nusa Tenggara. The provincial capital is Mataram (in Lombok) and a new international airport was opened in 2012 in the southern part of Lombok (Praya).

The province is home to the magnificent Mount Rinjani National Park and the enormous volcanic crater of Tambora. Sangeang is a large volcanic island and the remaining peaks are all infrequently hiked forested mountains in Sumbawa.

Aside from Gunung Rinjani (which was closed after the July/August 2018 earthquakes and only partially re-opened in June 2019), the most popular tourist locations include the three Gili islands to the north-west of Lombok (‘gili means ‘small island’ in the local Sasak language). Gili Trawangan has the only hill of any size, the tiny Bukit Trawangan (74m high) – which has the remains of a Japanese bunker and pleasant views to Gili Meno, Gili Air and Lombok . It can be hiked in less than an hour from the coast and is normally entirely free of tourists.
