Kalimantan Barat (West Kalimantan) is one of five Indonesian provinces in the island of Borneo. Most of the Ribus are to be found close to the borders with Central Kalimantan and and also Sarawak (Malaysia) including Gunung Berumput and its highest peak Mount Kanyi which is best approached from the Malaysian side. The provincial capital is Pontianak, which is located on the equator and has an airport with direct flights to/from several cities in Malaysia and Indonesia.

Not much is currently known about many of the mountains in the province although Bawang is fairly popular as it is one of the most accessible to those living in Pontianak.  Palung – Ponti is the highest peak in the Gunung Palung National Park, famous for biological research. Sadly, the price of a guided trip to the summit is one of the highest encountered in Southeast Asia. Gunung Niut is a remote nature reserve and an expedition to the highest peak requires about 4 days. Unfortunately, access issues have recently emerged, making it difficult for anyone other than scientific researchers to visit. Gunung Kelam is a huge granite dome near Sintang and is home to numerous endangered pitcher plants. Batu Daya is one of Indonesia’s finest natural landmarks and surely a place that will become very famous in the next decade as local infrastructure continues to slowly improve.

Cabang is on the main island of Karimata, but unreliable boat schedules and lack of information online make it a tough place to plan to visit without have a week or so to spare should you get stranded there. Note that Penrissen, Berumput (Kanyi) and Melatai are on the border with Malaysian Sarawak. Penrissen and Berumput (Kanyi) are usually hiked from the Malaysian side, and at present there is no information on access to Melatai from either side.
