Gunung Pesagi

This mountain is the highest in Lampung and offers some of the most challenging yet rewarding hiking in the province. Unlike most peaks in this area there are actually some wonderful open views on the higher slopes of the mountain and both flora and fauna remain relatively undisturbed. Lying just under an hour’s drive from Danau Ranau it makes a great long weekend trip from either Palembang or Bandar Lampung.

Gunung Pantaicermin

Gunung Pantaicermin is not a popular destination for hikers, and it is probably because of this that the trail is clear of litter, there are pitcher plants growing undisturbed on the higher ridges, and at least one of the few Sumatran tigers in this part of the island stalks its prey on the lower slopes of the mountain. There are very few decent views due to the dense forest, but it makes for a great outing if you’ve already done West Sumatra’s more popular peaks.

Gunung Marapi – Puncak Garuda

This Ribu is the most active volcano in Sumatra and is one of the most popular hikes in Indonesia. It is located to the south-east of the town of Bukittinggi and is easily reached from the main road south of the town. The mountain has an array of volcanic features – from deep, smoking pits to rather peaceful looking craters. From the top of Puncak Merpati, there are stunning views to Mount Talakmau beyond Bukittinggi to the north and Lake Singkarak and Mount Kerinci to the south.

Gunung Sinabung

Gunung Sinabung is a beautiful conical mountain, and due to its close proximity to Medan is one of the most popular hikes in Sumatra. August 29th 2010 saw the first eruption of Sinabung since 1600 which led to thousands of local people being evacuated from their homes. However, as of December 2010, the peak is open for hiking again.
