West Papua (Papua Barat) province is Indonesia’s most sparsely populated. The provincial capital is Manokwari. Aside from the world-famous diving area of Raja Ampat, a ‘surat jalan’ (permit to travel) is required for travel in this province.
Most of the mountains here are very remote and not often climbed. The most accessible is probably the province’s highest, Arfak, which is not far from Manokwari.
In November 2022, the province was officially turned into two different provinces, namely Papua Barat (West Papua) for the southern part including Manokwari and Papua Barat Daya (Southwest Papua) for the north/northwestern part including Sorong. Yes, you read that correctly – the northwestern part is now officially called Southwest Papua for reasons currently unknown. Because of this deeply confusing and illogical name we will not be updating the province page at present.
