The provincial capital of East Kalimantan (Kalimantan Timur) – and the largest city in all of Borneo – is Samarinda, although Sepinggan International airport is 2 hours south by road near the city of Balikpapan, the place where most people arrive at in the province. The new international airport just north of  Samarinda opened in late 2018 and it will probably make the region a little more accessible. The north of the province is served by Kalimarau Airport in Tanjung Redeb, Berau, but there are currently no direct flights from Jakarta meaning a transit in Balikpapan or Samarinda is required.

Not much is currently known about the peaks here, although both Lumut and Beratus are reasonably accessible from Balikpapan, requiring about four days each. Kulat (North and South) are simply two peaks in the vast, beautiful Merabu karst area that is remote and time-consuming to get to from Berau.
