The provincial capital of South Sumatra (Sumatera Selatan) is Palembang which in ancient times used to be the centre of the Buddhist Sriwijaya empire.

The highest peak here is the excellent Dempo near Pagar Alam. Patah has been climbed a handful of times, requiring a week or longer. Bukit Jempol, also known as Bukit Serelo, is popular with local rock climbers.
