North Kalimantan (Kalimantan Utara) is a fairly new province created in 2012 out of the – at the time – very large Kalimantan Timur. The main airport is on the low-lying island of Tarakan, but (in 2018) there are Wings Air flights from Balikpapan to the small northern town of Malinau and the slightly larger provincial capital, Tanjung Selor. By road, it takes around 5 hours to drive between these two places via Sekatak and Panca Agung (where there appears to be a penginapan). The road passes by Gunung Rian waterfall and mountain, but we are unsure if there is a trail to the top.

Not much is currently known about the peaks in this province as they are all very remote. For travel cars in Malinau, try Bisma Travel opposite the bus terminal (081347309997). 2018 rate per seat between Malinau and Tanjung Selor is Rp250,000. You can also continue south all the way to Balikpapan, but you will need at least a second day.

Note that Apad Runan and Mudung Dadu are both on the border with Malaysian Sarawak. Apad Runan has been climbed a few times from the Malaysian side.
