Bagging It!
Phnom Tumpor (also spelled Tumpoar) is Cambodia’s third‑highest peak, located in the Cardamom Mountains and within Phnom Samkos Wildlife Sanctuary. It’s rarely climbed and lacks formal trails so a local guide is essential. Treks usually start north of Pramaoy from the nearby Tumpor village (where there’s an active local community apparently keen on conservation), crossing fields and streams, then ascending steeply through forest towards the ridge and summit area via informal paths. The usual camping spot is at a flat plateau area around 1,200m. There are some surprisingly panoramic views on the trail but locating the true summit may not be easy given that there are a few bumps of similar elevation. It may be possible to complete in one very long day but most guides are likely to want to spend at least a night in the forests.
Practicalities
-
- Getting there: Tumpor village is a few km north of Pramaoy.
-
- Permits: Since the mountain lies within Phnom Samkos Wildlife Sanctuary, it is likely that permits are required, arranged via forestry officials or local contacts.
-
- Water sources: Water is available on the lower sections of trail but unclear if available higher up.
