Bagging It!

Mount Isarog is an active stratovolcano but despite its volcanic origin, there are no historical eruptions within the last few thousand years—its last confirmed eruptions date to around 2,374 BCE ± 87 years. It forms the centerpiece of Mount Isarog Natural Park, and its slopes are known for dense mossy forest and endemic wildlife. The final summit push—through heavy jungle—is considered strenuous but non-technical.

Main routes:

  • Panicuason Trail via Naga–Panicuason—the standard and most popular ascent (~8–10 h round-trip) starting in the west (350m).

  • Villaflorida to the south-east of the peak with a trailhead at around 500m.

The park contains historic sites: Guerrilla caves used in WWII by Filipino fighters, and the Filipino-Japanese Friendship Landmark in Barangay Bongcao, Pili, commemorating wartime history.

Practicalities

    • Getting there: Access begins from Naga City, Camarines Sur.
    • Permits: A hiking permit is mandatory and must be secured in advance from the Naga City ENRO or local DENR/PASU office—or at the Panicuason jump-off point, though early acquisition is advised .
    • Water sources: Multiple streams and waterfalls exist along the trail —these provide reliable water until about 1,800 m.

Origins and Meaning

Mount Isarog derives its name from local Bicolano legends. One tale involves Isaray and Dimaarog, whose union produced “Isarog” as their son’s name—another relates the word to “Isog” meaning courage in local legend.
