Bagging It!

Mount Mayon (or Mayon Volcano) is the perfectly conical active stratovolcano of the Bicol Region and the highest point in Albay province.
First scientifically recorded ascents date back to the mid‑19th century (by Scotsmen Paton & Stewart in 1858). Mayon is inherently risky—even a 1996 eruption claimed multiple lives—and remains under constant monitoring by PHIVOLCS and is frequently closed to climbers due to activity. Despite this, it draws climbers, day‑hikers and nature lovers for its scenic beauty and geological drama.

There are two routes up from the east at Lidong (100m). The traditional trail leads via Mayong golf course, AJ’s Mayon Basecamp (250m),  Camp 1 (690m) and Camp 2 (1,810m) with summit climbs generally prohibited due to the high risk of eruption and gas exposure. The Lew Lidong trail slightly to the north is similar, with a Camp 1 (650m) and a Camp 2 (1,050m).

Origins and Meaning

Named after Daragang Magayon (“Beautiful Lady”), a legendary Bicol maiden whose tragic love is said to have formed the volcano. “Mayon” means “beautiful” in Bikolano language. In local mythology, the volcano is associated with the deities Gugurang (who dwells inside Mayon) and Asuang (his rival from Mount Malinao). Eruptions are understood as the expression of divine anger or imbalance within the spirit realm.
