Bagging It!
Khao Rom (also known as Khao Khiao, “Green Hill”) is the highest peak in the Sankamphaeng Range, located within Khao Yai National Park, Thailand’s first-ever national park and a UNESCO World Heritage site.
The summit area once housed a US military radar station during the Vietnam War and it appears the true summit remains inaccessible to the general public due to its location within a military‑guarded zone. However, a nearby viewpoint accessible via park road and trail offers panoramic views over forested hillsides. Leech presence is noted in surrounding forest undergrowth.
Practicalities
-
- Getting there: Khao Rom lies within Khao Yai National Park, spanning several provinces. Access is via main park roads from entry points near Pak Chong or Nakhon Nayok. A side road leads to the Khao Rom Viewpoint Campground, about 14 km from the main entrance.
-
- Permits: Park entry fees apply at standard rates (approximately 400 THB for foreigners, 200 THB for children; Thai nationals have lower rates). Registration is at the park entrance. There is no public permit to access the actual summit due to military restrictions.
-
- Water sources: Water is available at the Khao Rom Viewpoint Campground, including toilets and basic amenities. No natural stream water sources are documented along short viewpoint trails so carry water if hiking.
