Bagging It!

Famous for its rhododendrons and sacred to the La Chi ethnic group, this mountain is climbed usually as a multi-day trek though it is probably possible to do in a single day. 2428m on the summit sign.

Practicalities

    • Getting there: Start near Vinh Quang, Hoàng Su Phì District, Hà Giang Province. Homestay Thang Linh looks basic but is just south of the peak at around 1,500m and is probably the best route up. Motorbikes/4WD are probably needed to reach this point.
    • Permits: Trekking Tay Côn Lĩnh requires advance permits from the Lào Cai/Hà Giang border guard or local district offices (e.g. Vi Xuyên or Hoàng Su Phì). Independent hiking is discouraged, and guides are considered essential, not optional.
    • Water sources: Multiple stream crossings exist along the trail but unreliable above 2,200m.
