Bagging It!

Phu Ta Leng (or Putaleng, 3,049 m) is located in Phong Tho District, Lai Châu Province, roughly 20 km northwest of Sa Pa as the crow flies, but a longer journey by road.

Phu Ta Leng is considered a more challenging and remote climb than nearby Fansipan, and not many casual hikers attempt it. There are several trails up onto the mountain from the south and west, and the main road is at an elevation of around 1,000m with village roads leading up the mountainside. Apparently there are some mountain huts at around 2,500m and most locals spend 2 days and one night on the the trail.

Practicalities

    • Getting there: From Hanoi, the most common approach is to take a train to Lào Cai or sleeper bus to Sa Pa. Continue by private car, motorbike or minivan to Lai Châu via the spectacular road over Tram Ton Pass.

    • Permits: A permit is required, typically arranged by your local guide or trekking company. Independent trekking is not advised, partly due to unclear trails and local controls.
    • Water sources: Unknown
