Mount Sumagaya gained attention following the tragic crash of Cebu Pacific Flight 387 in 1998—its fallen aircraft site lies on neighbouring Mount Lumot—not Sumagaya itself. Sumagaya is often climbed as part of a Sumagaya–Lumot traverse, which spans 3–4 days, covering remote mossy forest ridges and steep ascents with strong physical challenge and little infrastructure.
The typical route involves ascending through mud-laden forest, open rice-field crossings, and developing a camp near the summit of Sumagaya. Many groups then continue on to Mount Lumot on the same trek.
Practicalities
-
- Getting there: Access begins from Brgy. Mat‑I, Claveria, Misamis Oriental, around 2–3 hours by van or jeep from Cagayan de Oro City.
-
- Permits: Climbers must register with Claveria Municipal Authorities, Tourism Office, and possibly AFP (military) due to historical presence of insurgent groups on these remote ridges—security clearance is part of standard logistics. No formal DENR park permit system exists, but involvement of local guides from the Higaonon tribe is mandatory to ensure access and compliance with community protocols.
-
- Water sources: Streams and springs are available in lower forest sections and at intermediate campsites.
