Bagging It!

Mount Sicapoo is the highest peak in Ilocos Norte. It was first fully ascended in 2009. The trailhead is at Solsona to the north-west of the summit. There are two trails, with one following the Gasgas river and Balbalitok (724m) and another leading over Mt. Timarid (1,527m). The trails meet prior to Mt. Bubuos (1,410m).

Classic itinerary spans 3–4 days and covers approximately 44 km one‑way over multiple ridges.

Practicalities

    • Getting there: The standard jump‑off is at Gasgas River near Brgy. Manalpac, Solsona, Ilocos Norte.
    • Permits: There is no formal national park or regulated climbing permit system—however, hikers must register at the Solsona Police Station prior to departure for safety notification and local awareness.
    • Water sources: Reliable streams are found along the initial section (Gasgas River and Saulay), and at campsites such as Bubuos and Pakpako.
