Bagging It!

Mount Pangasun, also known as Babuyan Claro, is an active stratovolcano situated on Babuyan Island, the northernmost island of the Babuyan group in the Luzon Strait. It stands at an elevation of approximately 1,088 metres (3,570 feet), making it the highest peak in the Babuyan Islands and the tallest Philippine mountain north of Luzon. The volcano features well-preserved summit craters and a rugged terrain typical of volcanic mountains. Hiking routes and trail information for Mount Pangasun are currently under construction or not widely documented, indicating the area is remote and less frequented by casual trekkers. Due to its active status, climbing requires careful preparation, local coordination, and respect for possible volcanic hazards. The trail appears to lead up from the south-west side of the peak.

Practicalities

    • Getting there: To access Mount Pangasun, travelers typically start from Luzon and head north to the Cagayan province, proceeding to the municipality of Calayan that administers Babuyan Island. Getting to Babuyan Island generally involves a combination of land and sea travel, including boat transport from ports in northern Luzon. Once on Babuyan Island, local arrangements must be made to reach the trailhead near Barangay Babuyan Claro, the nearest community to the volcano. The remoteness and limited infrastructure mean logistics should be planned carefully, preferably with the assistance of local guides or community officials familiar with the area.
    • Permits: There is no detailed published information on formal permits specifically for climbing Mount Pangasun, but due to its active volcanic nature and location on indigenous or locally governed lands, trekkers should secure permission or coordination from local barangay officials or municipal authorities in Calayan.
    • Water sources: Published data does not provide specific information on water sources along routes to Mount Pangasun’s summit.
