Bagging It!
The highest mountain in Palawan, this remote massif remains one of the most challenging treks in the Philippines, rated difficulty 9/9 by PinoyMountaineer. Routes traverse ultra‑marshy jungle, indigenous terrains and a knife-edge ridge towards the summit. Lots of ups and downs. It is not even clear if most hikers visit the highest point as it lies nearly 2 kilometres north along the summit ridge from the commonly-visited southern top. The two trails meet at around 1,600m, west of the summit ridge
A typical route is a 4‑day guided traverse:
-
Day 1: From the north-west at Ransang (30m) to Magtangob or Balin‑balin camps
-
Day 2: Traverse to Paray‑paray camp (possibly around 1,310m and marked Gunub on OTM).
-
Day 3: Summit via narrow ridge (“Canopy Knife Edge”) and descend toward Brooke’s Point
-
Day 4: Trek out to Brgy. Malis (40m), which is to the south-east of the mountain near the coast.
Practicalities
-
- Getting there: Jump‑off occurs at Barangay Ransang (Rizal, Palawan) on the southwest coast.
-
- Permits: Located within the Mount Mantalingajan Protected Landscape, a national protected area since 2009, treks require DENR and barangay permits.
-
- Water sources: Stream water is reliable at lower camps such as Balin‑balin, Magtangob, Paray‑paray.
