Mount Mandalagan is a complex stratovolcano and the highest peak in Northern Negros Occidental, lying within the Northern Negros Natural Park. Although its last eruption is unknown, the summit hosts active fumarolic zones, including boiling solfataras up to 106 °C and 30 m steam plumes.

Frequently summited via the Tinagong Dagat (“Hidden Sea”) campsite, Mandalagan has recorded multiple documented climbs in recent years. Trails cross through mossy forests, ridge systems and volcanic crater terrain. The main trailhead is to the south of the peak at around 810m.

The hike is commonly done as a 1–2‑night ascent: Day 1 to Tinagong Dagat base camp via rainforest and ridge; Day 2: pre‑dawn final push to summit and return (~5–6 h up, ~4–5 h down). Some groups do it as a long day-hike.

The surrounding area—shared with Mt Silay—is designated as an Important Bird Area, supporting rare species such as the Negros Bleeding‑Heart Dove, Visayan Warty Pig and others in one of Negros’s last old-growth forest blocks. 

Practicalities

• • Getting there: The most popular route begins at Sitio Campuestuhan, Cabatangan, Talisay City—about an hour from Bacolod/Silay. Some groups exit at Patag, Silay City.

• • Permits: Climbing Mount Mandalagan requires permits from the Talisay City Environment & Natural Resources Office, including a Trek Orientation Certificate, waste inspection, and signed waiver. Guidance by a Bantay Bukid (forest guard) is mandatory.

• • Water sources: Along the Tinagong Dagat route, water is available at several stream crossings and near camp.
