Bagging It!

Mount Malindang is an inactive stratovolcano and the highest point in Misamis Occidental, Mindanao. The summit was first recorded in May 1906 by Maj. E.A. Mearns and W.I. Hutchinson. The main summit (North Peak) is reached via a multi-day trek through rugged jungle terrain, moss-covered forests and scenic waterfalls en route to Lake Duminagat, a historic crater lake.

Practicalities

    • Getting there: Trailheads are typically accessed from towns like Don Victoriano Chiongbian, Ozamiz, or Gingoog City. The most-used climbing route is the North Peak trail, which follows through the Lake Duminagat camp, then ascends to the summit in about 3 days and 2 nights.
    • Permits: Mount Malindang lies within the Mount Malindang Range Natural Park, declared in 1971 and designated an ASEAN Heritage Park in 2011. Park entrance requires DENR/PAMB permits coordinated through local government units (e.g., Ozamiz or Gingoog).
    • Water sources: The route includes several reliable streams and a crater lake (Lake Duminagat) near campsites. Water is available throughout the lower and mid sections of the hike.
