Bagging It!

Mount Iraya is an active stratovolcano located on Batan Island in the province of Batanes. It is the highest point on Batan Island. The volcano features a large 1.5-kilometer-wide summit crater largely filled by a younger cone forming the present-day summit. Mount Iraya is heavily forested and is known as the northernmost active volcano in the Philippines. While there are no detailed hiking routes or established trekking infrastructure publicly documented, Mount Iraya towers over the town of Basco and is significant both geographically and culturally. The last recorded eruption was in 1454, and it is part of the Luzon volcanic arc formed by the subduction along the Manila Trench.

Practicalities

    • Getting there: Mount Iraya is situated on Batan Island, accessible via flights to Basco, the capital of Batanes province. From Basco town, local transport or guides would be necessary to approach the mountain area as formal trailheads or public hiking facilities are not widely advertised.
    • Permits: There is currently no publicly detailed permit system specifically for Mount Iraya reported in accessible sources. However, as an active volcano within a provincial jurisdiction, it is advisable for visitors to coordinate with local government units in Batanes or community authorities in Basco for permissions, guidance, and safety protocols before attempting any ascent.
    • Water sources: Specific information on water sources along any ascent routes on Mount Iraya is not documented publicly.
