Bagging It!
The summit was first recorded in October 2012 by a small team (including Bugkalot guides), who pioneered the route via what they called the Zamora trail, ascending over three days through dense mossy forest, encountering civets, monkeys, abundant eel-rich streams, and a dramatic summit waterfall.
The ascent follows a 3-day route: Day 1 to base camp, Day 2 through mossy mid-elevation forest toward waterfall ridge, Day 3 summit and return. Locals (Bugkalot tribe guides) report multiple side trails from various villages in Mamparang Range, but no formal trail network or tourism infrastructure exists.
Practicalities
-
- Getting there: Jump-off is in Alfonso Castañeda, Nueva Vizcaya Province (Cagayan Valley Region)—the only access point currently logged.
-
- Permits: There is no officially regulated national park or climbing permit system. Climbers will need permission and guides from the Bugkalot indigenous communities in Alfonso Castañeda. Safety requirements include community coordination, wildlife respect, and minimal ecological impact.
-
- Water sources: The trail offers abundant stream water throughout the lower and mid sections. Near the summit, trekkers encounter a waterfall spring cascading down the ridge—usable but seasonal; as the area is remote, filter or boil all water collected. Carry additional water for summit day.
