Bagging It!
Mount Dulang‑Dulang (often abbreviated “D2”) is the second highest mountain in the Philippines and the tallest in the Kitanglad Range after Mt. Apo. The mountain is the ancestral and sacred domain of the Talaandig, Bukidnon and Higaonon indigenous groups. Climbs begin in Sitio Bol-ogan, Barangay Songco, Lantapan, Bukidnon. Trekkers participate in a traditional ritual ceremony (e.g. animal sacrifice and prayers led by a Datu Makapukaw) to honor local spirits—fulfilling FPIC (Free, Prior & Informed Consent) customs.
The Bol-ogan trail (Lantapan) is the standard 2‑day ascent: through rainforest, a mystical moss‑hung jungle dubbed “Avatar forest,” arriving at “Manny’s Garden” campsite, then ascending final ridges to the summit viewpoint above cloud‑filled valleys (clear days offer views as far as Mt. Apo). It starts in the south (1,250m) and leads via Low Campsite (2,180m), High Campsite (2,730m) and Manny’s Garden (2,890m).
A challenging route from the north (Intavas trail) starts high up at 1,690m and leads via Mount Kitanglad (2,899m) prior to a descent of around 400m and then an ascent of Dulang-dulang.
A few kilometres west of the summit are Langkayugan Peak (2,680m) and Mount Maagnaw (2,742m).
Practicalities
-
- Getting there: Climbers travel via Cagayan de Oro → Malaybalay → Lantapan in Bukidnon Province.
-
- Permits: Located within Mount Kitanglad Range Natural Park, entry requires a park permit processed via the Protected Area Management Board (PAMB) and DENR in Malaybalay City. Free, Prior & Informed Consent rituals with the Talaandig tribal elders are mandatory, followed by a traditional blessing invocation by a Datu. A maximum group size (e.g., 15–20 per day) is enforced to minimise environmental impact.
-
- Water sources: Streams are available at lower elevations.
