Bagging It!

Hkakabo Razi is officially the highest peak in Myanmar and traditionally considered the highest in Southeast Asia. Located in Kachin State, near the borders with India and Tibet, it is part of the Eastern Himalayan system within Hkakabo Razi National Park.

The first ascent was made on 15 September 1996 by Takashi Ozaki (Japan) and Nyima Gyaltsen (Myanmar), via the north face and east ridge route. Since then, at least one documented summit by an all-Burmese team occurred on 31 August 2014, though contact was lost and they did not make it home. International teams (including in 2014) attempted GPS measurements and reconnaissance but did not reach the true summit, stopping around 5,742 m due to technical challenges. The summit is covered in snow year-round.

It is possible that Gamlang Razi, a peak about 5 kilometers northwest of Hkakabo Razi, is higher and therefore the highest peak in Myanmar. This is unconfirmed and requires a proper survey, but there’s isn’t much between them.

Practicalities

    • Getting there: Approaches require a multistage journey. It’s an expedition of several weeks, technical climbing skills required.
    • Permits: Access to Hkakabo Razi is regulated by Hkakaborazi National Park, which mandates official approval for expeditions. Foreigners were prohibited from entering the area prior to 1993. All major expeditions since have required permission from park authorities and government clearance to enter Kachin border zones.
    • Water sources: Details unknown.
