Bagging It!

Doi Mae Tho is the highest peak of the Khun Tan Range, located near the confluence of Chiang Rai, Chiang Mai, and Lampang Provinces. It is definitely climbed occasionally by local hikers, with multiple route shown on some online maps, but detailed information is scarce.

It may be possible to do a multi-day traverse from near Khun Chae National Park Headquarters (1,000m elevation, to the north of the range) over subpeaks such as Doi Radar (1,415m) which appears to have a road almost all the way to the top, Doi Nok (1,701m) and Doi Pha Ngom (1,767m) before reaching the main summit at Doi Mae Tho. Wat Doi Lanka Buddhist temple (1,050m) lies to the south of the range and may be a much shorter southern approach or exit (potentially via Doi Chik Chong 1,675m).

Practicalities

    • Getting there: The city of Chiang Mai is fairly close but a driver or private transportation is probably advisable.
    • Permits: As the peak lies within Khun Chae National Park, hikers must register at the park office near the headquarters. Entrance fees will apply and a guide might be mandatory.
    • Water sources: Unknown so assume none.
