Bagging It!
Doi Khun Mae Ya is the highest point of Mae Hong Son Province, rising in the Daen Lao Range near Pai. The peak is moderately popular among local hikers but remains uncrowded. The ascent is achieved via unpaved forest roads and trails, climbing through dense deciduous and evergreen forest. There appear to be two routes, one from the north and one from the south, both relatively easy given the high starting points.
From the north, a forest track leads from Mae Ya Watershed Management Unit (1,450m) as high up as 1,800m and depending on the weather may be reachable on motorbike. From the south and south-west, forest tracks also lead high up the mountainside, perhaps easiest from near Wat Pa Mae Mueang Luang (1,000m) where there is a temple and restaurant then via Ban Mae Mueang Luang (1,280m).
The ridge offers panoramic views across Myanmar and Thailand. There are three tops, with the western one being the highest, the middle a little lower at 1,992m and the eastern top being the third-highest at around 1,976m. Is it possible to do the hike in a single day? That probably depends on how high up the mountain you can get on motorbike or 4WD.
