Bagging It!

Ba Na Hills is a famous hill-station resort located ~25 km west of Da Nang. The mountain is also known as Nui Chua and 1,487m is often given as the elevation. It was originally developed as a climate retreat by French colonial authorities in the early 1900s, and later restored by Sun Group starting in 2007. Today it includes attractions such as the Golden Bridge held by giant stone hands, French Village architecture, cable car, amusement park, pagodas and manicured gardens. The highest point looks to be close to Toulouse station for the cable car. The hill station was heavily bombed and abandoned during the Vietnam War. Now, having been redeveloped, it looks rather crowded with shoppers and tourists, not unlike Malaysia’s Genting Highlands.

It’s about as far from traditional hiking as it gets, but it may be a good ‘rest day’ destination.

Practicalities

    • Getting there: Cable car from Hoi An Station at the base of the mountain
    • Permits: Entry is via the Sun World Ba Na Hills resort ticket, which includes cable car round-trip fare + resort entry, typically ~VND 900,000 per adult (weekday/off‑peak may be ~VND 550,000).
    • Water sources: Not required. Once on the plateau, bottled drinks, cafes and restrooms are available throughout the resort and attractions.

Origins and Meaning

The name “Bà Nà” is believed to derive from the French word “Banane” (“banana”), referencing the abundant banana trees observed by French colonists, later Vietnamese-ised to Ba Na. An alternate hypothesis suggests a K’Tu ethnic meaning: “my mountain”. “Núi Chúa” means “Lord Mountain” or “Queen Mountain” in Vietnamese (núi = mountain, chúa = lord/queen), the original name of the massif before resort development.
