Southeast Asia Regional Safety & Risk Reports

Overview
These independent advisory reports are created by Daniel Quinn, co-founder of Gunung Bagging, drawing on over 15 years of hands-on experience hiking, exploring, and researching mountains across Indonesia, Malaysia and wider Southeast Asia. While informed by insights gained through Gunung Bagging and other field projects, these reports are separate from the Gunung Bagging platform and focus specifically on safety, risk and logistical considerations for travellers, researchers and organisations.

What the Reports Offer
Each regional or province-level report contains:

  • Key natural hazards – earthquakes, volcanoes, flooding, landslides and other environmental risks.

  • Infrastructure quality and accessibility – road conditions, trail reliability, transport options and communication facilities.

  • Social, political, and security considerations – including travel restrictions, seasonal closures and areas of concern.

  • Practical advice – implications for travellers, NGOs, embassies or businesses operating in the region.

The reports are text-based documents designed for clarity and practicality, rather than glossy presentation. They are intended as a complementary layer of information to official government advisories and local sources, not a substitute.

Regions Covered (November 2025)

  • Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia (all provinces), Lao, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Timor-Leste, Vietnam
