Origins and Meaning
“Chieu Lau Thi” comes from local ethnic language (likely Dao or Hmong) and loosely translates as “Nine-tiered Heaven” or “Nine-stair ascent”, referencing the 9 carved stair segments cut into the mountain by colonial-era workers to the summit. The French reportedly built those “nine flight” stone steps during colonial resistance periods to use the mountain as a lookout, which is reflected in the local name: Chiêu Lầu (“nine‑flight stairs”), Thi (“rock” or “peak”).
