Bagging It!

Not only is Doi Inthanon one of the easiest country highpoints, it is also one of the easiest mountains to reach anywhere on the planet. A road leads all the way up to a parking area just a few metres from the highest spot. Being located not far from Thailand’s popular Chiang Mai means that it’s a popular destination for regular tourists on day trips from the city, both foreigners and locals. It is one of the few places in Thailand where the temperature can drop below zero.

In the past the mountain was known as Doi Luang Ang Ga which means the crow’s pond top, named so because of the many crows found on its lower slopes. Its new name was given in honour of Inthawichayanon, the 7th Ruler of Chiang Mai who was born as Prince Inthanon around 1817. It gave its name to a new national park in 1954.

The mountain has several attractions besides the summit and is home to a weather station, Wachirathan waterfall, the Thai National Observatory and two large stupas called Naphamethinidon (นภเมทินีดล) and Naphaphonphumisiri (นภพลภูมิสิริ), built in 1987 and 1992 respectively. These two large stupas at around 2,14om offer the best distant views anywhere on the regular tour of the mountain and are well worth visiting.

The very highest point is marked with the Stupa of Inthawichayanon, and is the place where his ashes were left after his death, at which point the mountain was renamed.

There is also the Kew Mae Pan Nature Trail at around 2,200 metres elevation for which there is no additional entry charge though a guide is compulsory. It’s a circular (anti-clockwise) trail of less than 3 kilometres with 21 stations and a panoramic view. Allow 2-3 hours and start as early as you can for the best chance of a clear view.

Practicalities

    • Getting there:  Around 1.5 to 2 hours from Chiang Mai, depending on traffic. Hiring a car/driver from Chiang Mai or joining a day tour is much easier than public transport. Walking up the paved summit road is discouraged due to blind hairpin bends and speeding vehicles.
    • Permits: The entrance fee for Doi Inthanon National Park in 2025 is 300 THB for foreign adults and 150 THB for foreign childrenThai citizens pay 50 THB for adults and 20 THB for children. Tickets available at the main entrance, usually included in day tours from Chiang Mai. Take cash with you. Note that Kew Mae Pan Nature Trail is closed between June and October due to the rainy season but Doi Inthanon itself is open year-round.
    • Water sources: Not usually required due to the shortness of the hike unless you are doing the Kew Mae Pan Nature Trail in which case you should take bottled drinks with you.
