Bagging It!
Mount Baco is the second-highest peak on Mindoro Island after Mount Halcon . It lies within the rugged Mounts Iglit–Baco Natural Park, home to the critically endangered tamaraw (Bubalus mindorensis).
Practicalities
-
- Getting there: Mount Baco is located deep within Mounts Iglit–Baco Natural Park, straddling Occidental and Oriental Mindoro provinces. Access usually begins from towns like Sablayan or Calintaan, followed by transport to rural barangays such as Poypoy, Tamisan (Calintaan) or Tanglad . The terrain is steep, remote and largely undocumented, largely travelled by conservation patrol teams rather than organized trekking groups.
-
- Permits: As part of an ASEAN Heritage Park and DENR-designated national park, Mount Baco requires park registration and permits. Climbing activities—if permitted—must be coordinated through the Protected Area Management Board (PAMB) and DENR-MIMAROPA offices in Sablayan or Calintaan.
-
- Water sources: Streams and springs are likely to exist in lower elevations.
