Bagging It!

Mount Hilong‑Hilong is the highest peak of the Diuata Range in northeastern Mindanao. Despite its significance, there are no publicly documented summit records or ascent logs. However, multiple trails originating from Cabadbaran and Remedios T. Romualdez have ecological exploration reports, and the mountain is known for its pristine biodiversity and forested watershed status.

Climbers report standard trekking routes take 4–5 days round-trip, often via the Malvar Trail, crossing streams and forests before reaching summit ridge.

Practicalities

    • Getting there: Mount Hilong‑Hilong is situated along the Agusan del Norte / Agusan del Sur / Surigao del Sur boundary in the Caraga Region, northeast Mindanao. Access typically begins near the towns of Butuan or Cabadbaran City, proceeding into the Cabadbaran‑Santiago Watershed Forest Reserve.
    • Permits: Mount Hilong‑Hilong is part of the Cabadbaran‑Santiago Watershed Forest Reserve, designated under forest protection laws. As of yet, there is no formal public climbing permit system, but formal community and provincial coordination with local governments in Cabadbaran or Butuan is necessary.
    • Water sources: Natural water is abundant through the lower to mid elevation zones, especially via feeder streams and waterfalls that nourish four major rivers. However, water access near the summit is unconfirmed.
