Bagging It!

Mount Malinao is a potential stratovolcano in the Bicol Region. Trek reports describe long but manageable ascents—classified as moderate with durations between 4 to 7 hours—and note a collapsed crater and strong fumarolic activity. A track leads up onto the ridge from Tagoytoy to the east of the mountain. The highest peak is the ‘South Summit’.

Practicalities

    • Getting there: A commonly used trail begins in Malinao municipality, Albay, accessed via tricycle from Brgy. Amtic or Sabluyon to the jump-off by early morning. The trail passes through open roads up to ~490 m, followed by forested sections reaching Sugkad Plaza (~685 m), and then a jungle–river crossing route to Peak 1 at ~1,350 m. Transport is usually coordinated from Tabaco City or Ligao City, with pre-arranged local guides and habal‑habal or tricycles. Duration varies between 5.5–8.5 hours round trip depending on route variant and group speed.
    • Permits: Official permitting procedures are not documented publicly, but local barangay authority or DENR consultation is likely required.
    • Water sources: Reports describe multiple streams and water sources throughout the approach—even up to 30 minutes below the summit.
