Bagging It!

Mount Labo is the highest mountain in Camarines Norte and a significant feature in the Bicol Volcanic Belt. The hike follows a former geothermal exploration road through farmland and rice fields before entering dense jungle. The trail covers over 35 km round trip, ascends about 1,641 m, and includes around 5 river crossings and sections that are muddy and leech-infested. The final ascent climbs a mossy, steep jungle slope but remains technically straightforward.

Flora includes pitcher plants, Medinilla magnifica, shell ginger, and occasional Rafflesia sightings. Fauna includes birds typical of Important Bird Areas and the endemic Gray’s Monitor Lizard.

The trek is frequently done in 2 days / 1 night, with an overnight camp at an old geothermal drill site before summit day. Day-hike options exist but cover 10–12 hours round trip.

The north-east summit is around 15 metres lower.

Practicalities

    • Getting there: The typical jump-off is in Barangay San Isidro, San Lorenzo Ruiz, Camarines Norte. Hikers usually regroup in Daet and ride a tricycle about one hour to the trailhead.
    • Permits: While local guides and barangay hall registration are always used (a guide called “Tatay Anie” is commonly mentioned), there is no publicly documented fee schedule or official permit process.
    • Water sources: The approach includes multiple river crossings—the first few are substantial enough to submerge feet or cross via rocks; water from these can be used with filtration.
