Bagging It!

The small island of Mules is situated just off the southern coast of Flores. According to the Bakosurtanal map, the highest peak is called Poco Kepi and is as high as 566m. It appears as a fantastic steep cliff from many angles and is probably an excellent viewpoint over the ocean.

The second highest peak on the island is Golo Bendera (‘flag hill’) which is 353 metres high according to Bakosurtanal and another probable great viewpoint. Its name suggests it has been used for hoisting flags at the top of, perhaps on Indonesian Independence Day.

Nominated as a Spesial peak by Chris Whiting.

  1. Saw this intriguing island and mountain from a flight to Kupang last week. It looks a bit like Dun Caan on the Scottish island of Raasay. Hope to visit before too long, though I imagine with such steep cliffs it may not be possible to reach the very top……

Hi Dan, I drove along the South coast of Flores last week and passed alongside the island. I have some good photos to share if you want, because it is even more beautiful and impressive from the Western side. I also spoke about the Mules peak with Pak Marten, owner of the Wae Rebo Lodge and apparently the local authority for adventure tourism. He claims that nobody ever summited it but that one guy who tried many years ago got blown off the rock face by strong winds and died. Makes me want to try it even more!
