“In my area near Padangsidimpuan, North Sumatra, there is a mountain whose name Gunung Raya Lubuk. I have climbed this mountain 4 times since 2007, but never reached the true summit because the terrain is very difficult and there are no hiking routes and also because we do not have navigation tools. Hilly terrain here. I suggest you climb this mountain.
This forest is still virgin and is the natural habitat of tigers and Sumatran orang-utans.
In the year 2010 I and colleagues from the NGO Conservation International Indonesia CII research examined the presence of tigers using camera traps. Within a week we managed to shoot 8 of 10 cameras that we installed.”

Had planned a trip to at least see this mountain in a part of Sumatra I have not yet visited. There’s a direct flight from Jakarta to Sibolga. Expensive but direct. From there it’s about 2 hours to Padang Sidempuan which is the closest town to Lubuk Raya and has a couple of hotels. The plan was to take some photos at dawn and dusk before heading to Rantau Prapat on the Sunday morning and catching the lunchtime train there back to Aras Kabu station near Deli Serdang, Kualanamu and flying back on Sunday evening. Alas, after booking tickets, Sriwijaya went and cancelled their late evening flight and tried to stick me on a lunchtime one instead! I checked other airlines, but Batik too had cancelled their post 2100 flight meaning the weekend plans were totally buggered and I would have to cancel. Thanks! Non-refundable accommodation booked via Traveloka too, but that’s the risk you take when you deal with Indonesian airlines who are happy to mess you around. Perhaps next year….
