Bagging It!
Surprisingly little information is available on this mountain. It has been a hiked on a small number of occasions including in 2023, always via Gunung Batil (1,444m) to the south-west of the peak, and sometimes also taking in a third peak, Bukit Susu Dara (1,452m), which lies several kilometres further south. A few hikers have managed to bag Gunung Lawit in a single day, though an exhausting 15-hour outing.
A more popular peak to visit further north in the range is Gunung Tebu (1,039m with a prominence of around 501m). Near the top the vegetation is low-growing like bonsai, so views to the ocean and the Perhentian islands plus Pulau Redang and Pulau Lang Tengah are possible. Most hikers seem to spend one night camping up there so they can enjoy the sunrise over the South China Sea but it can be done as a day-hike. A permit and local guide are required as standard. The trail starts at Lata Belatan and passes Sungai Chakah Dua, Batu Mat Hasan and Jendela Pandang (viewpoint).

Here’s a great write-up on the Gunung Tebu hike, one I hope to do in 2025…
