North Maluku province is comprised of the northern part of the Maluku islands, once famous in the western world as the ‘spice islands’. Ternate is the administrative capital and largest population centre. There are regular flights from Jakarta and Sulawesi.
Both Gamalama and Kiematubu are easily accessible and growing in popularity with local student hikers, but many of the mountains in the province are rarely climbed. In addition to Gamalama, Ibu, Dukono and Kie Besi are active volcanoes.
The highest peak in the province is Buku Sibela on the island of Bacan. It has been climbed once or twice in recent years by university hiking clubs from Java and Sumatra, but on expeditions lasting over a week.
